How can you describe the color red to a blind man?

You need to draw in a parallel- i.e. something that they can relate it to. Temperature is a good idea- for example red is hot, blue is cold. Let him imagine it himself, even if it not exact his version will be fine.

Another idea- start by describing the colour white, and then more up the rainbow in colours though description.
