How can you differentiate Aspergillus and Penicillium? They both look the same.?

  1. there are some differences between the two species :

    Penicillium has a septated hypha and septated condiophore Aspergillus has just a septated hyphae

    the condiophore of Penicillium is branched but the condiophore and ends with bottle shaped phialides of the Aspergillus is not branched and ends with one large spherical phialide

    anyway under microscope after staining of the two species the Penicillium appears in bright blue color and Aspergillus appears in Grey or bright black color
