How can you encourage children to resolve conflict for themselves?

I mean young children who are still in nursery/primary school.

  1. are we doing all of your homework for you?  I kind of answered this one before.  First, you give them the words to use and then you encourage them to talk about it.  When they come to you and say "Johnny took my truck" tell them "ask Johnny if you may please have it back" - then watch what happens.


  2. By providing consistent boundaries and making sure the expectations of the setting are clear. You will need to model how to resolve conflict in a fair way and then try not to intervene unless it is necessary in order to help children learn to do it themselves. You must be vigilant about this though as some children use inappropriate mehods of dealing with conflict and may need more adult intervention to help them come up with fair solutions to problems.

  3. By example and encouraging them to talk to one another. Is Ann M. right another homework question being answered? How did we do our homework without the advantage of internet and sites like these?
