How can you find the costs of certain items in the past?

For example, I'd like to know how much a gallon of gas was in May 2004. I also need to look up prices for several other items, like milk, cost of a movie ticket, etc. How would I go about that?

I just did a google sears of yearly gas prices starting in 1930 and it took me to that website...it looks credible but that doesn't mean much!
