  1. the general formula:

    (x+1)^2= (x^2)+ 2x +1


  2. (x+1)^2 is the same as (x+1) x (x+1)

    so multiply all the parts together to get:

    x^2 + 1x + 1x + 1 = x^2 + 2x + 1

  3. (x+1)^2= (x + 1)(x + 1)

    The you use FOIL to multiply the terms out:

    F = First = x * x

    O = Outside = x * 1

    I = Inside = 1 * x

    L = Last = 1 * 1

    Add them up and you get:

    x^2 + 2x + 1
