My brother was driving through new york last night and got pulled over for speeding. the cop said that he had clocked him in three townships so he was getting three seperate speeding tickets. I have never heard of such a thing. How can you get three tickets for the same offence at the same time. Also what is a township?

  1. A township is just that, a town. The officer may be contracted to enforce traffic in all three jurisdictions therefore he can cite the driver in all three if he indeed observed the violations in all three towns. Sorry, tell your brother to slow down.

  2. Get a lawyer. Was it a trooper? Only a trooper could do that. But, why would he? Normally they pull you over after observing the first offense. Unless your brother ran from the cops, in which case he would have been arrested.

A township is...a town. Each one with a seperate police force. One police force cannot give tickets in another town. Only troopers can do that.

Unless where you live, those towns do not all have their own police forces. But usually, if there is a town court to go to, there is a police force for that court.

  3. Tell him to get a lawyer in NY that specializes in traffic law.  It will save him money.
