Question:

How can you get rid of a damp smell or get rid of the damp altogether???

I moved into a shared house last week and the previous occupant moved out three weeks previosuly to my arrival. Since moving in I have noticed a damp smell in the room, the rest of the house is fine. I can now smell it on myself and my hair and on my clothes and it is most unpleasant. The house itself isn't too old though there are no radiators only those that you can move around. I'm not sure if this is the cause. Does anyone know of any ways to mask the smell other than putting an air freshner in the room or little sacks of pot purri in my drawers? Is there anything I can do to get rid of it completely?

Thanks.

  1. This problem with dampness can be-solved ,but it may take some time & effort -ok?

    1-Try airing,the house /~opening all windows /doors etc.

2-drying  & sunning-every thing that feels damp to the touch/or odour.

3- See if  mould can be found on the walls or floors & remove .

4-Mopping floors with detergent & mild cleaning agent.-a few times perhaps.

5  Yes -Naturally air freshener & pot purri will help -that's-a very good idea.Go ogle searches will give you a better idea on how to deal with this problem.

7-I-wanted to ask if you've spoken to the land-lord about this situation?

they must have-some input into this situation?

    cheers !

Yes , a de-humidifier as suggested will help-a great deal in removing moisture .

(you will solve this problem-in time_Ive been there /done that!)!

  2. Have the shared house checked for toxic mold. If it is on you and you can smell it, it is dangerous. It may be in the walls from leaking water and may be in the insulation, drywall or plaster.

Try calcium chloride in a stocking hanging over a bucket and see how much of the moisture comes out. (keep away from kids and dispose of the liquid properly)

I would personally look for another place because of the danger. Also, check with a flood response company like Service Master or Service Pro and have them tell you what they will do to remove the smell.

If it is on the surface you might try a mild bleach washing. Wash everything to kill the spores. It may remove it temporarily but I would think it would come back if it is in the walls.

  3. You can get a dehumidifier.  They pull the moisture out of the air.  We used to keep one on our basment.  They make a lot of noise, but you can always run it when your not home.
