Depends how cheap you are willing to be.  My aunt is real cheap.  She registered at a community college just long enough to get a school ID.  Then she was able to get a great student rate.  She went to Italy a few weeks ago for about $500 RT out of JFK.

Those cunning folks at Aer Lingus offer some decent prices to Europe that are often hard to beat.  With direct flights from some major US airports.  From Dublin or Shannon, you can catch Ryanair flights pretty cheap to the mainland, or take the ferry.  Check it out.  The more time you have before you leave the better deal you'll get, try to be flexible.
