For a given type of material its resistance can be increased by altering its physical characteristics. This is the basic principle when applied to cable calculations for electrical installation work.

To explain further consider PVC insulated copper used as cable for a domestic electrical installation

For a given cross sectional area of cable.  If the length of the cable is increased then its resistance is increased

If the cross sectional area of a cable is reduced then its resistance increases

If the temperature of a given cable increases then its resistance increases.  

If you wish to increase the resistance of a circuit simply add more resistors in series
