How can you know if your canary is male or female?

Canaries are one of the most difficult birds to s*x,

Most breeders watch for them singing which takes time and patience,a male bird will readily sing when brought from a darkened room into a well lit room  a female just chirps.

You can have them sexes by having their droppings or blood tested,but this is expensive most breeders just wait.

People really need to give you more informative/detailed answers. I have bred canaries for many years, so I know what I am talking about. One way to know what s*x your canary is (and all breeders should know this) is to hold the canary on its back (as in, hold the canary in the palm of your hand where its tummy is facing towards you) and blow lightly/gently near its private area. If you see a small thing sticking up, then it's obviously a male. If you don't see one, then it's a female. Sometimes, however, it may be difficult to see what you want to see/find.

In that case, place your canary in a single cage. If it starts to sing, then it is most definitely a male. However, many people believe that if the bird is just tweeting (* high pitch* tweet....squeek squeek.....tweet), then it's a boy. This is a misconception. A female can tweet as well. You will know when a male canary sings; it's an actual song that one cannot mistake. You can even see his throat fluff up as he sings his song. You can search online for examples of a male singing so you know what I am talking about. However, it's imporant to note that male canaries may not want to sing because they have no motivation. If you have a female canary (and you're certain that it's female), place her in a separate cage next to your unknown s*x bird's cage. If he's indeed a male canary, he will want to sing for her in order to get her attention. Also, remember that some canaries may be shy. They might sing if they know  or think you're not around.

Be careful as well if you decide to bring your canary to a pet store to determine its s*x. I bought a canary from a pet store awhile ago (which I rarely do. It's better to buy from other breeders). I told them constantly that I wanted a boy canary. And I picked a male out of the cage that "only" had male birds. However, months later my "male" canary laid eggs. It's the last time I ever trust a pet store again. I even had them check to make sure it was a boy; and they said it was. I'm going to go back there to get some of my money back since I paid for a male canary (and males cost more than females).

usually the males sing and the females dont.

however some females so sing. it is very hard to tell the s*x of a canary until it is breeding season. More experienced breeders can tell just by looking at their birds if they have other canaries of same type and colour to compare it to.  It may be more difficult to s*x younger canaries.
