  1. If you love it and want to learn, that's all it takes!  Not everyone is an Olympic champion the minute they step on the ice....some people get into it and love, even if they don't have all the natural talent in the world....some people get into it and decide they don't like it.  Most skaters aren't Tara Lipinskis with natrual talent, hit the Olympics by 15 and then go onto other things in life.  Most of us have to practice hard, put in a lot of hours, have things we're great at and things we really aren't so great at and all skaters have good days and bad days...it's how much you love it that brings you back.  Most skaters will tell you that skating is addicting.  You go to bed thinking about skating, wake up thinking about when you can skate again and daydream about it in the inbetween.

Call your local rink and check into their group skating lesson program.  Most rinks have them and they're cheaper than private lessons.  They're great for getting all your basic skills and if you're interested, you can continue on in the levels to learn beginning jumps and spins.  Plus it's a fun way to meet more skaters and coaches.

Good luck and I hope you decide to start!  :)

  2. You may want to enroll in a group class.

From what your entry denotes, there is no question tha you want it. Determination and hard work is 90% of skating. You will know.

  3. you feel it in your heart,

you cant stand to be away from it

    its all you think about

i deffinately think there is only a few people who like the sport and actually go through with it. but you seem pretty determinded and i believe in you

  4. to know if you want to skate then you have to want to be at skating. you have to love being there and feel sad when it ends. well not everyday cause sometimes you will be sick or have a bad day, lol, but still if you love being there and you enjoy it that much then your right for skating. skating is about effort and heart, and some patience when you don't get a move right away cause with practice you will get it.

maybe that feeling inside of you is nerves maybe you are just nervous to start skating cause you don't know what it will be like. i can kind of remeber when i started skating and on my first day i was a little nervous because i didn't know anyone and i didn't really know how everything worked but now im use to it and have made friends. i love skating and you are right it is a very beautiful sport.

good luck! and remeber you won't know it you like it unless you try it.

  5. both, you feel cool, and it's very rewarding

  6. One night I went ice skating with a friend of mine . . . only because she wanted to.  Once we got on the ice, ohhhhhhh . . . something inside me just lit up . . . and I knew THAT was what I wanted to get into.

As a kid, I dreamed of becoming the best roller skater in the world - even though I only skated on the sidewalk a lot.  Growing up I loved music and dance.  As an adult, I needed to find an exercise regiment.  So somehow figure skating would cover all those things . . . and I instantly connected that thought when we skated that one faithful evening.  How cool is it to relive a childhood passion (though it was different equipment) . . . and keeping healthy at that?  I just knew skating was meant for ME!

I did research on ice skates that week - and I had my very own pair by the end of the week.  Skates are not cheap, so buying my own pair you bet I was going to commit to this sport.

I skated many evening public sessions on my own after that, then met a few nice people "my age" who encouraged me to take lessons.  I thought I was fairly good at it . . . and my new friends who taught me stuff thought I learned so quickly . . . so I had my first group lesson within a couple months.  They let me skip to the next level that very first day.  I loved learning to skate all these moves . . . and I just practiced  my little heart out to keep moving forward.  Eventually I got my own coach, got to compete, perform, go to Adult Nationals . . . I did more in skating than I ever thought I could.   And I had LOADS of FUN every step of the way!

I know what you mean as I was once there too.  The only way you're going to find out is getting productive about it and going for it.  You have a gut feeling about entering this beautiful sport, so I say go with it . . . you may be pleasantly surprised how far your love for skating will take you.

I knew I loved to skate the moment I started, but it wasn't until I really got into it that I realized HOW MUCH I loved it.  I'll tell you - it'll never be out of my life - wink!!!  Best of luck to you!!
