Just wanted to add googlesites to the list above as it is also free and it is very easy to create a basic website with it. Point an Click is all it takes. http://sites.google.com

If you have specific requirements (e.g. your own domain) then there are a few things you will need to do to prepare to build your site.

1) You should learn HTML and you can for free at http://www.w3schools.com/

2) You will need an HTML editor unless your are proficient in HTML and can use notepad. Adobe Dreamweaver http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweave... is the best and you can download a free trial. The best free one is NVU: http://www.nvu.com/

3) Then you need to find a host and if you are willing to pay a nominal fee then http://www.godaddy.com would be your best option.

You can get a free website with Microsoft Office Live Small Business - http://tinyurl.com/officelive . It has a free design tool that allows you to create web pages without coding. It has 500mb of web space and no ads. MS is giving a free domain name for the 1st year (.com)
