  1. You can include more discussions which will lead to more student interest.  Also you can do a lot of projects such as brochures, mini-villages, etc.

  2. instead of hitting them with a ruler use something else.

  3. Why do they have to be managed differently? Good classroom management is good classroom management no matter what subject is taught. Make your expectations clear, keep the students involved, use a variety of teaching methods-not just lecture all the time! I've had good luck in beginning my class with a discussion about what I expect and then turning it over to the students and asking them what they expect from me. We have a discussion and come up with some ground rules. I've found that treating them with respect and getting them involved in creating our environment works wonders. They feel it's THEIR class, not my class and it makes a difference.

  4. in a very simplistic sense, English & SS classes would be more discussion-oriented. hence the atmosphere could be more interactive verbally. and sometimes sitting in a circle, flopping on the floor helps everyone to open up & join in unself-consciously. there can also be a lot of play-acting / role-modeling.

in a maths or sci class some formality is inherent in the technicalities & hands-on sci experimentation. but even here, working in groups can be a great help. and simplification of the subject matter while making it more interesting is essential.

basically, it would all depend on the particular topic being taught - what tools & techniques should one employ to make it participatory, interactive &  motivate students to learn & understand. if you can get the kids interested, involved & motivated your class management issues would be resolved. and for this the teacher has to know the subject matter thoroughly, down to the very basics, and be able to communicate effectively.

a little humor always helps - a lecture is not a do-or-die situation for either ... so be light-hearted & don't forget the child in you.....

  5. Be firm, if you say no, mean it! Even if they ask again. What I did for my 5th grade class was: We were studying pilgrims and indians. Now my assignment was to pick a pilgrim or indian and then write a report about it. But it wasn't any report. The kids got to write down what they would've done as a pilgrim/indian. They would write that down and then they would gather up facts to compare to your version. The questions I asked was: Who is your character? Why did things go the way they did? Where did all this take place? They absolutely LOVED it! I mean, it was brilliant I think! Hope I helped!

  6. well mathematics people pay attention cause if they dont pass, they fail. so you dont really have to manage it.

english, art, and social studies kids really don't care. so you have to be in control, but don't be overbarring. try not to yell, because if you yell a lot kids will not like you and you still won't have control.

    -dont yell a lot.

    -make sure you're in control.

    -make lessons fun and engaging.
