  1. Reducing NOx (nitrogen based oxides) and SOx emissions (sulfur based oxides). Smog I believe is mostly caused by NOx emissions. Both of them can cause acid rain (NOx leads to nitric acid and SOx leads to sulfuric acid eventually).

    NOx can be reduced by proper engine designs (better temperature control) and catalytic converters (they convert Nitric oxides to nitrogen on exit). Also, in bigger systems (like power plants or furnaces), oxygen can be used for combustion instead of air (thus eliminating nitrogen totally). For sulfur, better fuels, treating the flue gas with water or iron or other catalysts to absort them before venting out to atmosphere.
