Hello, my dad has diabetes and my great aunt sadly passed away due to it in April earlier this year (2008). I try to stop snacking away and exercise but just don't have the willpower to prevent it. Help?

  1. Well, you could do like I did. Wait until you get it, stay in denial for a year while life becomes miserable.... then finally get scared enough to do something about it. Or, you could learn from others who have it and have reversed it with diet and exercise. Once you face up to the fact that you could go blind, lose limbs, go on dialysis, or what have you, taking care of yourself becomes relatively easy.

The answerer that says you cannot prevent it is flat out wrong. Knowledge is power. If I can reverse it sufficient to stop all medication, you can most certainly prevent it.

  2. This MD gives great advice how to prevent diabetes.

  3. unfortunatly because diabetes runs in your family, there is a good chance you will get it too. Too lesser the chance, eat healthy, not too much sugar (but make sure you do get some)

  4. Diet and exercise are the 2 best ways to prevent diabetes. There are foods which can help you to control your blood sugar. Green vegetables, fish and cinnamon are some.

  5. it depends..

do they have type 1 or 2?...

    if they have type 1..

you unfortanentally have no way of preventing it.

because that means it runs in the family..

and you may be lucky and not end up getting it! (:

    if they have type 2..

they you will just need to keep up what your doingg..

and manage your weight. and health! (:

    so....

    goodluck!

  6. You cannot PREVENT diabetes.  Either you will have it, or you won't.

You CAN, though, keep it from effecting you:

    1) Watch your diet. Stay away from sweets like  soda pop, sports drionks, energy drinks, candies, cakes, ice cream, cookies, and sweet fruits like watermelon and oranges.

Also eat fewer breads, pastas, rice, and potatoes.

Eat more fibers such as brocolli, green salads, whole grain cereals (Cheerios), and whole grain breads.

    2) Exercise more.  Walking is good (I lost 15 pound in three months by walking a mile 5 days a week), but street basketball, volleyball, ands soccer are good IF you do them 3-5 days a week, 52 weeks a yea.

    3) Keep your weight under control,  Check with the doctor and see what you "best" weight should be, and try to stay very close to that.

This is not a question of "I don't have the will power".  You need to find "Won't Power" -- "I won't eat this" and "I won't set around on my butt all day".

The biggest "thing" to becoming diabetic is heredity.  And you've told us that diabetes runs in your family.  Diabetes is 100% fatal.  ALL diabetics die from it, unless they die from some kind of accident.  If you don't want to end  up with  blindness, amputation of hands and feet, heart attack, strokes, kidney failure and dialysis, and the inability to enjoy s*x, then you need to MAKE the WILL POWER -- right now.

IF you do the above things you can stop diabetes from happening to you.
