      There are way too many details to put in a yahoo answer, but I read a book recently that was wonderful and will help you alot.  You can get it for cheap too because it's been out a few years.  

     It's called "Write What You Want,  Sell What You Write" by Skip Press.   You can get it on amazon.com but you might find one at a half-price books store too.

I actually just recommended this to someone else... you might want to start with a website like roastingpigeons.com, because it is free, you get useful feedback and criticisms, and it creates a dated publication in your name (in case of someone trying to steal your work).
