  1. A DVD player will only play DVD's, not record. Pre-recorded DVD's will have copy protection, which places artificial interference (like a bad picture or green stripes). One example is Macrovision.

You will need a DVD recorder which takes DVD-R/RW or +R/RW discs, these being the most common formats. The recorder will need to be connected to a set top box (Freeview) or Sky box or have it's own Freeview tuner built in. Or a computer with a DVD writer and a TV Tuner card installed. I've found the quality is not as good on a PC, as against a proper DVD-Recorder.

Prices are dropping all the time, £150 or so will get something very good. Stick with a brand like Panasonic or Toshiba and you can't go wrong. Make sure it's multi-region if you want to use it for playing DVD's. Unlike places like Currys, Richer Sounds sell multi-region DVD recorders.
