How can you reduce the memory size of a photo?

My photos take up too much room on computer. some are over a mb and Im trying to get them down to a few hundred kb. Is there any way I can?

You can reduce the size of a photo in most photo-editing programs, even the simplest ones.  You want to do this when you send photos through e-mail.

But you also want to hold onto the originals in case you ever want to print them or edit them.  Why not just store them on CD-Rs?
