I heard you can use vinegar but I was wondering if it might damage the door.

  1. I'd use bleach. If the dampness continues, it's going to regrow unless it's resealed.

  2. Most building supply centers  (like Lowe's) sell special mold removal products along with the products you will need to seal or paint the door.

Mold grows on surfaces where it can get a "foot hold", where there is moisture and little air flow.  Once you have killed the mold, washed and dried (a hair dryer works great for this) the area.... the door is going to have to be "sealed" with a Polyurethane polymer or painted with a good oil based enamel paint to discourage it from returning.

You didn't say whether the door is painted, finished or sealed.  However, assuming it's got some sort of sealing (like varnish, urethane) you can get away with using soap and water after you've removed as much mold as you can with a putty knife or other scraper or even brillo pad or sponge with a rough side.  Just be easy on the rubbing action when you're removing the mold.  Then you can wash it with soap and water, or try using water and amonia.  Once it's clean, wipe the area with a dry rag and try and make the area as dry as possible.  I doubt it will damage the wood. Doors normally can withstand a bit of wetness, especially if it's an exterior door.  Just don't take the water hose to it or open a nearby fire hydrant on it!

    good luck
