How can you ripen bananas faster? An apple is just not working.

I bought 4 bananas on Saturday (3 days ago) and they were yellow, not green. I also bought an apple, a red delicious, and got a paper bag. When I got home I put everything in the bag and hoped they would be ripe by Sunday, they were not. So on Monday I bought 2 more apples, a granny smith and a different red kind and put them in the bag. It has been 1 day and now they are starting to get black spots but every post says they should be completely ripe in 2 days, what am I doing wrong? Any other suggestions?

  1. Separate the bananas and they will ripen faster than when they are in a bunch.  Make sure they are unrefrigerated as well.

  2. place fruit in a brown paper bag and seal it or close it good and place it in a dry place humidity will ruin fruit will turn it brown or spoil it. same goes for avocados it works for me

  3. Try hitting the section of the grocery store with reduced price produce. It's stuff that normally needs to be used within a day of purchasing it, and I always get my bananas for banana bread there. They are good and ripe and cheaper too!

Oh, and while tossing the bananas in the fridge can make the skin turn brown, I don't believe it's going to do anything as far as ripening them goes.

  4. If the bananas have spots they are consider ripe.

The apples that you buy are usually already ripe and can be eaten any time.

Just peel that banana and eat it. It's ready!

  5. anytime I refrigerate bananas they turn brown,...u could try that.

  6. Try putting them in a paper bag with a tomato or two.

  7. I'm not sure what went wrong....because you have done it right from what you describe.   As the fruit starts to ripen, it will give off ethylene gas - it's not harmful.  It's a natural hormone and is part of the process. The paper bag traps the ethylene close to the fruit, but still allows for air to flow into and out of the bag. Ripening shouldn't take more than three days.

Where are you putting the bag 'o' fruit?  Is it off to the side of your counter, undisturbed and out of sunlight, or is it maybe being exposed to heat or light?

  8. leave them out in the open, on a counter, and make sure it doesn't get to warm around them. that's all i know.

  9. Put them in your fruit bowl with other fruit.

My experience is when you have got a lovely full fruit bowl with fresh bananas on top, tomorrow they have brown spots on them, ruining the effect.

    Don't you hate that?

Always keep them in a warmish place, where the sun reaches.

  10. I guess I'm curious on what you consider ripe.  If you been yellow with tons of brown spots, for most that mean it's way to ripe.  If you mean a yellow banana without the hardness of the banana itself, then try something different.  I have problems keeping the bananas unripened.  I've tried keeping them in the plastic bags that you put them in at the store, the fridge, and in paper bags.. Each method for me makes them ripen faster.  So if you haven't tried one of these, go ahead.

    Good Luck
