My dad is starting a new job and his boss (the big boss) is a black belt in TaeKwonDo. My dad wants to show him his gratitude for the oportunity of working for him.

He used to be my instructor years ago and I told my dad about bowing. I remember at the end of our class we would salute all the students with a handshake and the black belt students with a bow and a handshake puting the left hand under the elbow of the hand that was doing the shaking. Besides bowing, is there any other way to show respect?

  1. most of the time when i meet new people...related to martial arts or not i bow my head slightly if they are of seniority to my i drop my eyes as well most people dont pay much attention to it accept for the martial artists...i recently met retired master stick fighters that didnt tell me about there fighting untill afer introductions and commended my respectful greeting....my advice is just tell your dad to bow his head an exadgerated bow is not needed just his head when he gives a handshake....

  2. it japan and okinawa it is a show of respect to lower your eyes when shaking hands or bowing. ...."never take your eyes off your opponent"...true...but by lowering your eyes you are signifying to him that you do not see him as your opponent.

also you do not have to be in a dojo to show respect....whoever said that needs to go back to class and learn a few things about how to take your art outside the dojo

though i will agree...most people these days just dont give a damm about tradition or culture outside the dojo/dojang.

also alot of martial artists are humble...they dont want it advertised. so maybe just keeping it to himself is best.

  3. go-mop-su-na-da thank sir

  4. yes bowing is a major sign of respect but sorry i dont know any ways

  5. It is not necessary for your dad to bow, unless his boss is oriental or comes from a culture where bowing shows respect. He is not a student, so therefore just the normal manners and politness you would show any boss is suficiant.

  6. Sake and cervaza will do it  !

  7. Well in a normal class, we bow, never talk while the instructor's talking, and refer to the instructor (if it's a man) as "sir". Hope I helped!

  8. That's the dumbest thing i ever heard, hes not at a dojo okay? This is a job, its not because he is a black belt that you should act like you're in a dojo. Making him bow will only ridicule himself. Just shake hands and be polite.
