  1. Do not put air fresheners near a tank because the fumes might get in the tank and make the fish sick or cause problems in the tank. Ammonia is given off by the fish as a by product of their being alive. It will take some time (from when you set you a a tank) for the good bacteria to start breaking down the ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. You have to have this ammonia for the bacteria to grow. Another think that will help keep the ammonia down is plenty of true live aquatic plants in your aquarium, they will use ammonia as part of their food.

  2. You can't stop it, your fish make it! The beneficial bacteria in your tank help out with that, but as a temporary fix you can put an ammonia removing agent in your filter. I just buy the net bags and the ammonia chips in bulk. Zeolite Carbon blends do the same thing too. Consistent water changes also help keep ammonia down.

  3. A filter will clean out the water clean the air and also put a air freshener by the tank if the smell is bad. You can also maybe ask the pet store they might help. But fish do produce it but a filter will definitely help but you have to clean it about every 4 weeks.
