How can you tel the difference between a local and express train when it comes into the station in New York?

  1. Express differ by letter or number, for example : the A train is express and the C train is local. The Z train is express and the J train is local. Inside the train stations there are signs above the track that also tell you which trains are local and which are express and if that doesn't help never be afraid to ask the conduct er when a train parks into a station. The conductors are usually found in the front or middle of a train. Hope I helped :)


  2. To add to Lisa's excellent response, at many stations the locals and the express trains come in on separate tracks--sometimes separate platforms.  The signs above the platforms further help you to distinguish between the two.

    There's an old saying in New York: when it doubt, take the local, which makes all stops.
