How can you tell a female chick from a male ??

Im wanting to buy some chickens and i dont want all boys ... Just 4 girls and 1 male ... So how can i tell ???

  1. Well if you look under the wing of the chick and see the prick feather rows, the males will have all long rows and females have short and long rows of feathers.

  2. The only way to tell is by looking at the vent, which isn't something the average person knows how to do. Some stores only sell female chicks, so you might call a few ahead of time and see. If it's absolutly necessary to have 4 hens and 1 rooster, consider buying full grown chickens.

  3. It is very hard for the average person to tell with very young chicks.

    I recommend buying sexed ones (by a professional) and get a guarantee that if any are males you can take them back and trade them for females. I bought some like this a few days ago.
