  1. You should be able to feel her ribs when lightly running your hands down her sides, same with her spine. She should also have an obvious waist and a tucked up tummy.

Have a look at this Body Condition Scoring chart and see what category your cat fits into:

    http://www.purina.com/cats/health/BodyCo...

If she is overweight, a change of diet may well be necessary - most people feed their cats catfood from supermarkets (supermarket own, Whiskas, Fancy Feast etc) and these tend to be rubbish for weight control, even in small amounts.

A vet or nurse can advise on your cat's ideal weight, and a diet if necessary.

  2. usually a round tummy and a bit of a waddle

my cat orange has been on the heavy side , we got him from the shelter like that but with a little exercise (taking him to the bottom of the garden and then having some one shake a box of treats so he runs up the lawn and gets a bit of exercise everyday) and watching what he eats he is now a  healthy weight

these days the only exercise he gets is walking from the sofa to the fridge and he still likes to sit outside the fridge ever living in hope that something tasty will fall out , always with a face on him like we never feed him lol

  3. Set her on a table in front of you. Feel around her ribs and stomach. You should be able to feel the ribs, with a small fat covering. Bony areas, such as hips and shoulders should be easy to feel. If she is over 6 months of age, you should see an abdominal tuck when you look at her from the side. Her hips should be about the same distance apart as her shoulders, with no big fat tummy in between!

  4. you will know when she can barely walk and looks pretty overweight...
