How can you tell if a friend JUST signed into Facebook?

is there a way to turn on some kind of notification so you don't have to repeatedly check to see who came online?

No there isn't.  But you can get Scrapboy (facebook tool) that basically adds a lot of AIM/msn type functionality to Facebook chat.  And one of the new features it adds is what you are looking for: the little pop-up "x signed in" or "you have a new chat message" bubbles on your desktop.

It also lets you wall-write, chat and view photos from one pretty small window which aside from being convenient also saves up room on your desktop so you can do other things.

For now, i dont think there's any way of knowing but you can check to see people online by seeing if they've done anything [their newsfeed] and the chatting thing.

i think the chatting thing would be better. cept if they appear off.
