How can you tell if a hermit crab is going to molt?

  1. He will get sluggish and start burying himself into the substrate, don't dig him up, keep the tank very humid and keep the water and food fresh every day. Don't bother him till he comes up on his own, it could take 1 week, or it could take a month for him to come back, if you bother him, he will get VERY stressed out. He may die during the molt, if so, you will smell him, it will smell like rotting fish, if he does, i'm sorry, there's not much you can do to prevent it. When you give him food while he's buried (he will come up to eat sometimes very late at night) sprinkle reptile calcium powder or crushed cuttlebone onto the food every day so he can grow a better, stronger, brighter shell.
