I am looking at a used mongoose with a good price and I have way too many projects to commit a good sum of money to buy a high quality bike, so for now I was looking to buy something that will do, I found one for under 75$ with a slight problem with the shifting, the bike has disc brakes

  1. If you mention the model we can help you out, but my guess is if someone is offering a Mongoose with discs for $75 it is probably a cheap version.

Most cheap Mongoose MTBs have "letter" names like "MX-250" while the better ones actually have real names like "Otero Elite". BEWARE of this, though, as the Mongoose Blackcomb and a couple of others are also cheap ones.

EDIT: So far, based on the "cracked gear" comment I would almost certainly say it is a cheaper model. Replacing a chainring (in front) or cassette (in the rear) would be much more cost effective than selling a $1000+ bike for $75. This informtion implies that the chainring is not replacable (common on cheap bikes) or the cassette replacement was prohibitive.

You wouldn't see someone that would ride a better bike sell it so cheap for such a minor problem. However, a new crank or a cassette might easily cost 50% or more of the price of a cheap bike.

Yes, there are cheap bikes that have discs, and those discs don't work any better than the brakes you find on other cheap bikes.
