How can you tell if a police officer is really a police officer or acting to be one?

  1. Ask to see an ID..


  2. That's a good question.  You can ask to see his/her badge, but then again, fake officers are often psychos who come prepared to the scene.

  3. Ask to see his identification.  You could also call the Police Department's non-emergency number and ask them if they have an Officer by the name of the guy in front of you working for them.

    Most of the time if the officer is in full uniform, has a working radio (not a little two way bought at Radio Shack), a marked patrol car, etc.) he's probably the real deal.

  4. You are allowed to ask for another officer to come to the scene.

  5. (if on the spot)Ask him what is his badge number without him looking. They should have memorized it before the graduate from the police academy. Ask what was his class number. What is the name of the juridiction he stopped you on.
