How can you tell if emeralds are real and not lab made?

Have them examined by a certified gemnologist.  The average untrained persion can not tell a good immitation from the real thing but someone trained in that can.  Some fakes are obvious but many lab made stones give an appearance of the real to the untrained person.

It takes instruments to do what you are asking spectroscopy.

Some gems have instrument specific to discern the differences.

      What a great question!  I certainly Can't answer that, And I don't believe the average layman could.  But I do know this, That the material they come up with to substitute Diamond, (Diamonal) Is running In first place to fool some people.

They should have some clarity and not look a weird (fake) green. The color should be kinda like hunter green.
