i mean can the wind pick really really fast or what.

  1. If you're standing outside wind speed doesn't necessarily mean much. I've been in situations where there's plenty of rain, but hardly any wind, if any. Look at the clouds and see if there's anything drifting down from them. Rain showers from a distance appear as gray bands extending downwards from clouds. A major increase in wind speed is more associated with thunderstorms.


  2. When it is going to rain, you have a low pressure system.  So sounds travel further (do you hear distant sounds like trains); smoke does not rise real high; leaves turn their bottoms up; birds roost earlier because its hard for them to fly.  

    Yes the wind can pick up real quick
