  1. If you can find a running specialty store (for example Fleet Feet is one around here), they can direct you to the right shoe for your foot type.  You won't find much good help at a regular sporting goods store most of the time.  Ideally you want to find a store where the salespeople are runners and they can watch you walk and run and recommend a shoe.

Some current running shoe models that you are designed for flat-footed runners in need of maximum Motion Control include Asics Gel Foundation or Asics Evolution, the Brooks Addiction or Brooks Beast, Mizuno Wave Renegade, and the New Balance 817.  A running store should have these, but you may not be able to find them in just your regular old Foot Locker or other sporting good store.

In general, a good Motion Control or stability shoe will have what's called a dual density midsole.  Usually you can tell these shoes because part of the midsole of the shoe is made of a harder material, it's usually gray in color.  This harder foam material is what prevents the shoe from rollling over too far and corrects the overpronation common with flat feet.
