How can you tell if two dwarf hamsters are mating?

i went to petco and got two girl hamsters and last night one of them went on top of the other and tried to sniff underneath the other one and we thought they were both girls but how can i tell if that was what they were doing or not please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

girls wont to that to each other u got a boy buy the sounds of it if u not want them to breed them then seperate them before they do u cant tell if they mate unles u c her pregnant

I think it would be better you separate them before one gets pregnant at this young age and damages her health.

Pet shops are known for wrongly sexing hamsters since it is a bit difficult to s*x dwarf hamsters. I have attached the link to a site which would give you an idea of sexing your hamsters -

The way you have described their behavior, it does look like mating behavior since during mating, the male would be on top of the female and sniffing her area while the female will freeze. Same s*x hamsters would not exhibit such behavior.

Hamsters become sexually mature from their 5th week onwards, so don't think they are babies and this is highly impossible, they are fully capable of mating from 5 weeks of age.

Please separate them immediately since the female goes into heat every 4 days and they can get pregnant very fast. Also a young hamster will have a difficult time as a pregnant first mother.

If you have a male and female, the female will kind of arch herself and stick her butt out and the male will come behind her and l**k and kind of go to town.  It is quite normal for females to groom eachother or sniff eachother when they are babies.  I work at a pet store and I see the females groom eachother all the time.  When pet stores get their hamsters, they are already sexed and seperated from the company that they get them from. It is harder to s*x dwarfs and always possible that the breeder made  mistake.  You just want to watch your hamsters and if one is indeed a male and the female gets pregnant, you will want to take the male out of the cage.  Since you did buy them from Petco and if the hammies do have babies, Petco will take the babies when they are ready to go if you do not want to keep the babies.
