  1. The can both cause pain.  You could have gall stones and have no symptoms at all.  Or you could have attacks of pain, nausea, and vomiting that start suddenly and go away within a few hours   The most common symptom of gallstones is pain in the stomach area or in the upper right part of the belly, under the ribs.

Kidney stones can also be painless while they are in the kidneys, but they can cause sudden, severe pain as they travel from the kidneys to the bladder.

Call a doctor right away if you think you have kidney stones. Watch for severe pain in your side, belly, or groin or for urine that looks pink or red. You may also feel sick to your stomach (nausea) and may vomit.

  2. Gallstones can cause heartburn, chest pain, pain between your shoulder blades, or pain on the right side just under the ribs.  Also, gallstones will cause nausea and vomiting, whether you have eaten or not eaten.  You can have many or 1 of these symptoms.

Kidney stones cause back pain.  Usually on one side.  Also, they can cause groin pain.  They can cause nausea and vomiting, which usually occurs when the pain is the worst.  There may be blood in the urine, although you may not see it.

If you think you have either, please see a doctor asap.

  3. ultra sound it the only way, my gall was filled with stones and i had no idea untill one got stuck in the valve or soemthing and i had a horrible pain that was going from my belly to my back... i was in tears, then it would go away and i would be fine and back and  forth till they took out the whole gallbadder

  4. The first sign is usually persistent pain.  With gallstones, it's often after a heavy meal or a lot of sweets.  With kidney stones, it can be pain during urination.  Occasionally you see blood in the urine.  Medical imaging is the only true test.  See your doctor.
