How can you tell if you have bought a rip off perfume/cologne?

i jsut bought armani code (not from a major retailer) and on the box "armani" is in capitals, i looked on the net and on the pictures the "armani" is in lower caps, do you think this would be a rip off perfume based on that?

How long it holds its scent.  

We had a guy in our outfit pour a cheap cologne thru the slices of a loaf of white bread so he could stand to drink the results.  For a couple of hours you could tell what he was drinking when he talked to you up close. In time he had to buy the more expensive cologne because he drank-up all the cheap stuff.  Naturally the better quality cologne stayed on his breath longer.

The Navy does not allow troops to bring booze on board and he was in bad shape for a drink (we were on a 6 months cruise with long periods between stops).

well check the label carefully because i thought i was buying hugho boss and instead of  just writing the name it said "like" in small print hugho boss

I think you got ripped off...that's why I always buy my cologne from dept. stores, you know you got the real thing.
