How can you tell if your smoke alarm detector is functioning?

Is there an indicator or test to be sure it is working?

Burn some toast! lol  Sorry I couldn't resist.  I remember when I was an apartment dweller and everytime I would burn toast my detector would go off!  I'd go with Woodtick's suggestion.

make sure you replace the battery if it's battery operated.

PUSH AND HOLD THE TEST BUTTON IN FOR ABOUT THREE SECONDS.   if the alarm goes it's working and the battery is still probably good.   they want us to replace the battery in those units

every six months just to be safe,

do what i do, start the room on fire.

if you hear a loud beeping noise, that means its working.

You can test it by pushing the button on the front.  If you are not convinced that the button is an accurate test, you can light a piece of paper and hold it underneath, but be sure that you have a fast way to extinguish the fire.  Hope this helps.
