How can you tell wen potatoes are ready to dig up,never grown them before

the best way to check and see if the potatoes are ready to dig is to dig up one heal of them and if they are big enough to eat then they should be ready. I like potatoes when they are small and called new potatoes.. But any ways my mom always said there was something about when the ground cracks around a heal of potatoes that they are ready to dig. so i wish you the best of luck with your new found talent of gardening,...

the best time to pick them is after the entire plant has died not just the flowers. use a pitchfork or something to scoop them up and make sure to dig all of them up.

After flowers die.Early spuds is 12 weeks,mid and late varieties are 16 weeks.Never dig them all up.Try one plant,and if too small or not many spuds leave for two more weeks.Keep watered

First off...to get good potatoes you have to mound up dirt around the stems. Potatoes develop on the buried stems of potato plants.

Second, if you are wanting a large crop, then wait till the stems die down. Alternatively, you can get smaller more tender new potatoes if you dig them up when the stems are tall and green.

Potatoes prefer cool damp weather so if it has been hot and dry you may not get a large crop.

That depends on the kind of potato you are growing. Sweet potatoes don't flower/blossom as irish potatoes do. The best way is to dig gently around the root and see what you come up with. Look for more than one because they don't all develop at the same rate.
