How can you tell what your type your Mosin Nagot is?

Like mine has a 91/30 stamped on it. But was made in 1942. So what does the M44 or M38's mean?

A 91/30 was about 4' long in total with a detachable bayonet. An m38 is a carbine of the 91/30, it's shorter. The m44 has a attached bayonet. The 91/30 was sighted without a bayonet, but the m38 and m44 (extended) are.

Its the type. The M91/30 is essentially a model 1891 thats been reissued in 1930 and up. Hence the "/30"

The M38 is a carbine developed in 1938. Hence the 38.

M44's are a little weird in that they were first built in 1943. Don't ask why they aren't M43's, nobody really knows.

Fun info: Check for your arsenal mark. Its either a star with an arrow indicating Tula or a triangle with an arrow indicating Izhevsk. If you have a triangle with a 1 in it then you have a DDR Mosin.

The 91/30 is a model 1891 made with design changes initiated in 1930

A M38 is a Mosin with design changes made in 1938 incorporated into it

Not sure about a M39

A 44 is a M38 with an  integral non detachable bayonet

which started manufacture in 44

A 91/59 is a 91/30 cut down to carbine length

An M38 is short. An M44 is short, with an attached bayonet. The model number (i.e. 91/30, M38, or M44) has to do with the year that model was designed, but they kept making 91/30s long after they started producing M38's. By the way, there's also an M59, which is still short, but without the bayonet again. All of these are the same, except for length and the presence of a fixed bayonet. You can swap the bolts and other parts (I think you have to leave the firing pins in their respective bolts though).
