Question:

How can you tell when a pie is done?

Ivy tells me to stick a knife in the pie and when it comes out clean, the pie is ready.

This does not seem like a very accurate test of done-ness as any time you stick a cherry pie, the knife is going to have cherry smeared on it.

Is there a better way too test done-ness?

  1. bubbly filling and browned crust will tell you when a pie is done. if the filling isn't bubbling but the crust is golden-brown, put aluminum foil over the pie.

  2. Usually a pie is done if the filling is bubbling and may be bubbling a little bit on the outside of the crust.  I think the knife tests for heat in a pie.  You stick the knife in the pie and touch the tip of the knife to see if it's hot, but be careful because the filling can burn or scorch you.
