  1. Depends on the type of figs. But, basically figs are ripe (and at their best, I think), when they're soft like an over-ripe banana. If you have Kadota figs, they also turn a purplish brown color when they're ripe.

They range in a avariety of colors from a slight tan to a dark brown when you can pick them..as soon as you can lightly squeeze one and it gives a little..You can eat it then..or you can wait till it gets exceptionally ripe and eat it then..it is just your preference on how you like to eat them..similar to a banana..You can eat when yellow..but some prefer to eat after they start getting dark brown sugar spots on them or even riper...
