  1. Tornadoes come out of big storm systems with tall clouds. They form towards the back of the storm, as it moves through an area. Meteorologists studying radar look for hook shapes near the back edge of the storm, that tell them the air is starting to rotate back there.

    Folks often describe a funny light, maybe orange in color or grey--could be from a twister kicking up dust already. Sometimes there is heavy rain or hail. Others say they hear something that sounds just like a freight train without the whistle.


  2. I've been in three tornado situations. Green clouds, hail or the sound of a train get my attention now. One night it was pouring down rain and all of a sudden it stopped and sounded like a train rumbling through then the apartments I lived in exploded I watched it bounce back in the air and then slammed into a parking lot tossing cars around like toys.

  3. Popular belief is that the sky turns a sickly shade of gray-green when a tornado is about to strike. Many people swear by this color, including my parents.
