How can you tell whether or not a spider is poisonous?

You can't really tell.

But what I do is read up on spiders and I know how the poisonous spiders look.

Brown recluse spiders, black widow spiders, funnel web spiders,and red back spiders are dangerous.

Black widow spiders have that violet red mark on their back near the read end.

Brown recluse spiders are brown and if they bite they can cause serious nerve damage.

Funnel web spiders and red back spiders live in Australia.If you ever go to Australia, please watch where you step.Shake towels out first before you use them.

Do like I do and read about the different species.Also watch specials on Animal Planet or Discovery channel.

I don't believe you can simply tell if they are poisonous or not just by looking at them. If I recall correctly, you have to know how to visually identify a particular species and know if that species is poisonous or not. Depending on where you live, there are only a few poisonous spiders: brown recluse, black widow, yellow sac, hobo, and red legged. If you can identify these and avoid them, you should be OK. I try to avoid all spiders so I don't have to worry about it!

I don't know much about spiders but I know that Black widows, the one with the red hour glass symbol is poisonous. Watch out for them.

Most , spiders are Poisonous you just have to be very  careful, where you go , especially now that it is summer time,  the jumping spider, some of them are poisonous,  and most of them are brown,   the Tarrantula,  is verry deadly,  and hairy  and they are black, orange, and brown, .. And the red leggs spider they have a shell  on their body, just they leggs are showing,  small eyes  they pinchers you can hardley see it,  and they are also poisonous.   And the daddy long leg, they are brown,  long  legs and , they webs are pretty thick, and some of them prouch any where and any place.  and the black widow has a red mark by the abdomen ,, , the female is poisonous  and eats its mate .... some spiders are camouflaged....  So be aware of Spider ,because my husband, and my daughter both were bitten by a spider , they both were in the hospital, my daughter hand was swollen up real bad, and my husband was  in worse condition,  he couldn't walk, cause he was  bitten in his back and it paralizes his muscles he was dizzy for couple of days , thank God they both are fine and survived..Most Doctor can identify , a spider bite, and so can our family because we will never forget this, they are two identical bites or hole beside each other, and they are very unique nothing else look like a spider bite , my daughter was in the woods, when this happen to her, and my husband was working an a house , when this happen to him..        I hope this help you a little.,,, Peace out.
