How can you thoroughly mix doughs or cookie mixes without an electric mixer?

I tried to make cookies the other day and didn't work at all because I couldn't mix it good enough because I don't an electric mixer.

you have to stir all the ingredients together really well, make sure there are no lumps of flour or whatever. Also make sure you're following the directions of what to mix when carefully.

My mother always used her hands.  We were poor and didn't own anything electric when I was very young.  When we were older, she still used her hands, stating that's how she was brought up.

Meatloaf was my favorite thing to watch her make with her hands.
