I have a grey horse and I want to keep him as clean as possible. Is there any way I could train him to p**p in a muck bucket?

  1. Actually, I think it would be possible...but a lot of work and probably not worth the effort in the end.

I remember reading an article in a well-known horse magazine years ago (Equus maybe?) about a lady who taught her geldings to pee in a special spot where she had absorbent material down in their paddock.

I don't remember the reasoning behind the training (I'm thinking there was too much smell and the neighbors were complaining or something), but she said it took a lot of work, but she was fairly successful.

Not sure exactly how you would go about it...for her geldings there was natural incentive to pee in her spot, as there was no "splash" from hard ground, and she used a spot they were already using frequently.

  2. is that possible? like a horsey litter box? cool.

  3. Wow i dont really think you should have a horse if you just asked this question. I have 4 horses get over it they will not p**p where you want them too

  4. Sorry but I don't think you'll be able to. Horses like to p**p wherever they want, since they are used to the freedom.

  5. hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahaha...

    you are my hero.

  6. If you don't want to clean a horse's muck do not own a horse or pay someone to clean it. Having him go in a bucket is unsanitary for 2 reasons:

    1) the bucket can be mistake for a water bucket and be filled with water by someone and given to your horse.

    2) What are you going to clean that bucket with? You have to actually touch the f***s now and clean the bucket every day. And then what happens to the stuff you cleaned it with, the brush, rag, etc. if you or someone caring for your horse pickc this up and uses it to clean a horses food tub, water tub, or body now its there and it can make them sick.

    Instead do this:

(note: in general a horse will like to go to the bathroom in one general area, the back of his stall, the corner of a paddock, but this rule does not apply to horses whom travel a lot or are on the race track because they stand a lot in trailers and learn to go where ever they stand.)

    1) if you are concerned about his tail, wrap it with a tail wrap. DO NOT use vet wrap or anything simliar to it, thats how horses loose their tails. You can also braid his tail and bundle it up (similar to how you would in a drafting competition) this will preserve his tail

    2) bathe him with water, no soap, every other day. I have a 'cream' colored mare. She is always getting dirty. I bathe her every other day with just water. Bathe your horse to keep stains, dirt, etc. off of him. In winter (if winter is cold in your region) take a warm wet cloth and rub the stains out and then dry with a warm towel.

3)brush often, simluate his oils and coat and he will shine.

Also note that when a horse goes on anything solid (like cement, bucket, rocks, etc.) the f***s splatter and get on him anyway so it's pointless. The best way to keep him clean is to bathe, brush, and braid him. Had him go on dirt or pasture, the soft surface will give, dirt will also cover and dry it quicker if your really paranoid about it.

As far as training. A horse can not be trained to go in one area because you can not be there every time he goes. A puppy you can put in the yard, or scold when you get home. But a horse is different, it lives outside 24/7, it is working, transported, and eating at random times. You can not predict his bowel movements like a dog. So this thought of training will be fruitless. Instead take that time to improve your riding, or his flexiblity!

  7. not really, horses are used to pooping freely..so it would be hard. you could give it a try..theres no harm. you would REALLY need to know his "pooping" schedule. (like maybe after breakfast or dinner feeding) try putting a muck bucket behind him and wait for him to p**p. LOTS of praise. i honestly dont know if it works, but you might as well give it a try!!! lol!

  8. The same way you trap a polar bear.  Put a bunch of peas around a hole in the ice.  When the bear comes to take a pea, kick him in the icehole.

  9. Wow. Honestly it would probably be easier to sell your horse than to teach him that.

  10. Give him treats when he uses  it?
