I think I just answered a very similar question.  Sadly, unless you find some magical body of water, magic wand, or poss another mermaid, you wont be turning into a mermaid (at least not in the way you want) Trust me :-P

However, as I mentioned to another mermaid wanna be (and that's not said in a mean way at all) check out www.mermaidrentals.com  There you can have a tail - one that will work in the water - made for you.  The creator of this site was the guy that made the tail for Madison in the movies Splash and Splash II, he also created pheobe's tail in Charmed.

Also - sports wise - look into Synchronized Swimming and free diving :-) they should interest you.
