  1. The difference between the P and S waves gives a distance.  That makes a circle around the instrument.  Combined with information from other instruments, where the circles intersect is the site of the earthquake.

  2. Scientists are using the arrival data of seismic wave from 3 different stations. The arrival time of secondary wave minus primary wave in seconds multiplied by 8 will give you the distance of focus.Accordingly they will draw three circles one from each station. They all will bisect each other at one particular point . This point is the focus.Just above this point on earth is called epicenter. But I have developed an another way that will help to locate epicenter from single station by using seismograph picture to gether with direction finder. I am the person issued the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our Indian coast. But my warning was ignored. Please visit my site to improve your knowledge on earthquakes and Tsunami.

  3. scientists have many earthquake detector stations setup, and if a quake is detected, it is pinpointed using three stations and the three circles they make:http://www.theimage.com/geology/notes15/...

you see how the three cirlces intersect, that is where the epicenter is. the circles come from the stations
