Having brought two foals both are new forest ponies, I was wondering if you can estimate there size when fully grown. Oscar is 8 mths old and stands at 11hs 1 and William is 7 mths old and stands at 11hs.

  1. Measure from the elbow to mid fetlock and then invert the tape - this will show you how many more inches above the wither you horse is likely to grow...but it can take 5-6 years before they are mature.

  2. At a guess and for their breeding I'd say 12.2 to 13hh give or take either way but did you know that if you have them gelded they will grow more! and for all you sceptics out there this is a fact, you can expect an extra 1inch at least and if you geld at just the right time"I personally do not know the right time" up to a hand can be expected. so I'd say get them gelded sooner rather than later. good luck

  3. Go to this link! It really helps!!!!!!

  4. is it possible to see their parents then yu can poss be able to seee coz they grow roughly bout the sameee size

  5. not gunna no until older

  6. Mm.  Difficult really, but normally you would look at the size of the sire, but as you do not know who the sire is, or even the dam, it is difficult to say.

New Forest ponies can go up to 13.2hh as an average.  Nearer than that I could not say.  Your younger one could be on the taller side as he is already the same size as the older one, but that depends rather on conditions.

One way to tell how tall they will grow is at about 5 years old their back end tends to be higher than front and the next year he will have caught up.  Horses and ponies have growth spurts, one year front end, one year back end.  Have a look at his rump and maybe you could caluculate then.

Good luck with your two boys and have fun.

  7. you can only guess,   hormones change,

  8. Do you know the height of the sire and dam? This can give you an estimate but no one can be sure. For example, we have a filly at the moment who's dam is 16.1hh and sire is 15.1hh - we expect her to make around 15.2hh. Feel free to email me if you want any more help :-)

You can also tell by their croup how much growing they have to do but again this is only an estimate. For example, if the foals are very croup high (which they will be at this age) then they still have a good bit of growing left to do. =]

  9. generaly the height will average out between the heights of the sire and dam, although this can only be an estimate. One of ours was by a 16hh mare nd 16.1hh dam and hes now pushing 17.2hh as a 4yo! but they will not be totaly matured until they  are about 3yrs old. New forest ponies dont tend to get much bigger than 148cm (14.2ish). so they will probably make anything between 13.1hh & 14.1hh judging by their heights at the moment. They wil grow in spurts, and may not rwch 13.2hh until they are 3, but then might shoot up again once broken in etc. hope this helps

  10. it depends a lot on the foal itself, but it would probably help to see how tall the sire and dam were. you could probably guess that they will be relatively around the same size.
