How catch freshwater shad?

how can i catch fresh water shad in lake martin about 3-5 inches in around 20-40ft? is there a rig or something or bait i can use to attract them?

  1. buy them at the bait shop - it's easier then you can get on with real fishing... instead of fishing for your bait... personal thought to ponder.


  2. try a small bit of worm or maggots

  3. Ive caught them in lakes with a drop net, like the ones for catching anchovies/sardines at the beach.  we used bread for the bait--they are usually on top--must be cold where you live to catch them in 20 or 40 feet of water~

    the net resembles a parachute, has a few bars connecting a rope to the middle, put a slice of bread in the net and lower it into the water...PULL UP LIKE  MAD_MAN! the faster you **** the more fish stay in the bottom of the net...

    Ive seen guys throwing nets to catch them as well, like hawaiian style throw-nets--they would fling some corn in the water--you then watch for the shad to come up and eat the corn or bread pieces then throw your net on top and sinch it up...
