  1. kk,

Over the life of the bulbs, compact fluorescents can save a lot of money in reduced energy costs, so they are actually cheaper in the long run.

A problem with CFLs has been what to do with them once they burn out.  They shouldn't go in the trash, since they contain a small bit of mercury, which is a toxic chemical.

Fortunately, there are recycle programs.  You can read about them at this helpful article from eHow:

    How to Recycle CFL Bulbs

    Hope that helps..

  2. They are not.

They contain mercury which which requires special disposal.

None are mfg. on U.S. soil

Its a fool who beleives that the energy co. stock holders will allow reduced profits and not demand increased rates to compensate.

  3. Hi

Because they consumes less power (it needs about 20% of power to have the same lightness) and it lasts 6 to 12 times longer than ordinary lamps.

  4. Lower power usage for the same amount of light. My bulbs are 70 watt and use 20 watts of electric. The mercury in them is a very small amount. When a bulb will last 2 or 3 years compared to one lasting one year or less, the initial cost is still lower.

  5. CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, and lighting your home is about 20 percent of your energy use. If every home in America replaced just one standard bulb with a CFL, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to that of about 800,000 cars. (see link)

CFL bulbs use a small amount of mercury. Since most mercury emissions occur from the production of electricity, using CFL's actually results in LESS mercury being released.

There are many recycling programs for CFL's, and more are being set up as the bulbs are becoming more standard.

A CFL in one of our.bathrooms had been in use for more than 2 years when I replaced it. It was still working, but the newer bulbs use better technology and have a better lighting effect.
