How change subnet mask in new office? ... My company recently acquired a small company in a near by town. This new office has the same subnet as one of our other remote offices. People in the new office can not print to their network printer. I was told the subnet needs to be changed on all workstations and in the network-printer settings.

Does this sound like a legitimate scenario?

If so - how does one pick a different subnet and apply the changes to all the workstations?

Can one set a fixed subnet but not fixed IP addresses?

I am not an experienced IT person. Any thoughts are appreciated .. even if you do not have an answer - any information that will help me develop more effective questions would be great. Thanks.

  1. Yes, it sounds like a legitimate scenario. Here's what you have to do:

    1. Locate the network switch(es) for the new office.

    2. Locate the DHCP server for the new office.

    3. Log into those as admin, poke around the settings, and you'll be able to see what needs to be changed.

What you want is: the office computers will get their dynamic IP addresses from the DHCP server, so you don't have to change them manually on each computer. The switch will understand which subnet it's serving and will know how to route this traffic out.

  2. Yes, What you probably want to do though is just change the network ips you are using.

for instance if you havent got many machines in either office you could set your networks up like this:

    Office one - 10.0.0.0 with a subnet of 255.255.255.128

    Office two - 10.0.0.129 subnet 255.255.255.128

This way they all appear in the one large 255 range But one office's computers are on the first half of the subnet and the other office is on the second half.

Or just do it all as a class c.

    IE: office 1 - 10.0.0.0 Through to 10.0.0.255 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0

And office 2 as 10.0.1.0 Through to 10.0.1.255 same subnet

    Etc etc
